What is baptism?
The Bible clearly teaches that Baptism is the first step of obedience after making a commitment to follow Jesus Christ. Baptism allows a believer to communicate to the world their dedication to Christ. Baptism identifies the believer with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. When we are immersed in water we identify ourselves with Christ in His death. Arising out of the water, we declare our faith in His resurrection.
“... buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised Him from the dead.” Colossians 2:12
Why be baptized?
1. It is God’s command that believers be baptized. Just before Jesus Christ left this earth, He left these instructions to His disciples, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:19, 20)
2. Jesus gave us an example of obedience to follow. “And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.” (Mark 1:9-11)The baptism of Jesus was an act of obedience to the heavenly Father.
3. Baptism is a public statement identifying a person’s faith in Jesus Christ. By baptism, a believer shows their identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. Baptism allows a believer to communicate to the world their dedication to Jesus Christ.
