In accordance with the meaning of the word and practice in the New Testament, deacons are servants of the church who are tasked with ministry needs in order to allow the pastors to accomplish their God-given calling of shepherding the church. Here at Catawba Valley, we are greatly blessed by the ministry of our deacons and the numerous ways they serve our congregation.
DEACON CARE TEAMS
At Catawba Valley, each member is assigned to one of our deacons by last name. Since deacons are tasked with providing spiritual encouragement and facilitating practical care for the needs of the congregation, deacon care teams supply a vehicle for more personal contact and care to each family unit.
Our deacons serve the congregation by . . .
1. SUPPORTING. As servant-leaders, deacons support the pastors' ministry of the Word so that the gospel might increase and that the body of Christ might be built up in love (Eph. 4; Acts 6:1-7). Additionally, they serve by orchestrating and leading ministries that promote and benefit the comprehensive church ministry.
2. PEACEMAKING. As shock-absorbers, deacons strive to maintain unity in the Body of Christ. As we see in Acts 6, physical neglect was causing spiritual disunity. The deacons were appointed to head-off disunity by resolving potential obstacles for gospel growth.
3. FACILITATING. As ministry-coordinators, deacons exercise practical care for temporal needs within the congregation. The primary way they do this is by providing encouragement and practical care to the congregation through the vehicle of deacon care teams.
4. CARING. As caregivers, deacons provide support in times of need. In situations of benevolence, bereavement, or serious illness, our deacons are ready to minister. One primary aspect of their caregiving is in their ministry to widows.
What can you expect from Deacon Care Teams?
First, you can be assured, that along with the pastors, your deacon is praying for you. Weekly prayer needs are shared with the deacons so that they might pray more effectively for you. Second, your deacon provides support in times of crisis. Your deacon and their family are ready to minister to you. Third, your deacon is available. It's only possible to minister when the need is known. If you have a need, please contact your deacon to let them know.
